Phased structural and selective demolition inside an active rail and bus terminal for Suffolk Construction.
Overview
Select Demo was contracted by Suffolk Construction to perform phased structural and selective interior demolition and extensive site work at Boston's South Station Terminal, one of the busiest transit facilities in New England.
The demolition makes way for a 678-foot, 1 million SF tower of retail, residential, office, and hotel space, a five-level parking garage, and a 106,000 SF expansion of the bus terminal above the tracks of the existing head house.
Scope
- Engineered structural demolition of concrete, footings, foundations, and grade beams
- Removal of decks, track, head house canopies, and platforms
- Extensive demolition within the bus terminal
- Site work supporting the tower and terminal expansion
Approach
Work was sequenced in phases so that each area could be isolated, demolished, and turned over while the train and bus terminals remained active around it. Protection, debris routing, and hours of work were planned around passenger and operator movements.
