Boston CITGO Sign

Sectional dismantling of the landmark sign and its steel support structure with a 500-ton crane for Suffolk Construction.

Overview

Select Demo was contracted by Suffolk Construction to perform the specialized dismantling and removal of the iconic Boston CITGO sign and its supporting steel structure as part of the redevelopment of 650 Beacon Street.

Scope

  • Dismantling of the rooftop sign into four equal sections, each lowered to grade for processing and preservation
  • Dismantling of the structural steel dunnage and support framing into two major sections, crane-lifted to the ground
  • Rooftop protection measures
  • Spot lead abatement associated with torch-cutting operations
  • Full-time health and safety oversight

Approach

Each section was sized for the crane and the available staging in Kenmore Square. Riggers worked from suspended baskets to cut and rig the steel, and each piece was lowered to the street for processing. Protection covered the roof, facade, and sidewalk below.

Outcome

Select completed its scope and helped facilitate the preservation and relocation of one of Boston's most recognizable landmarks.
