Sprague Energy Cannon Street Power Plant

Structural demolition, asbestos abatement, PCB remediation, and hazardous-material decontamination of a 255,000 SF power plant.

Overview

Select Demo was contracted by a national engineering firm to perform the structural demolition, asbestos abatement, PCB remediation, and hazardous-material decontamination of the 255,000 SF Cannon Street power plant in New Bedford.

Scope

  • Structural demolition of the plant
  • Asbestos abatement, including a six-story hung boiler
  • PCB remediation and hazardous-material decontamination
  • Controlled collapse of a failing roof structure and construction of a new roof enclosure

Approach

Select used a 250-ton crane with a dead-man to further collapse the failing roof. The steel was left in place and a new roof structure was built to contain the entire building, allowing the collapsed roof to be abated under a Massachusetts DEP Nontraditional Work Plan.
